Many couples have heard of "safe words" but have perhaps never explored their importance and place in lovemaking. Safe words are for much more than just adventurous one-night stands, they can actually open new doors for committed couples as well.

What is a safe word?

Safe words are a couple's pre-approved word that means STOP. A person's way of saying this is not fun for me, and I want you to stop what you are doing immediately.

Why have one?

Couples who use them are more open to discovering new sexual positions and acts because they always know they can stop the sex if they feel physically, mentally, or emotionally uncomfortable.

Cautions

If you and your partner choose to use a them, you have to go into it agreeing that:

1. There will be no offense if the safe word gets used. It does not mean that you know longer want to have sex or that you have lost love or respect for your partner it simply means that you want the current act to stop.

2. It must be respected. No questions asked, no apologies necessary. Just stop.

3. Never use it jokingly. Laughing or giggling while using your safe word is a mixed signal and it renders it powerless.

Options

It can be anything that both partners can remember, but that would never be otherwise used during sex. If you are role playing or have more adventures sexual encounters, choose your word wisely. Do not use pet names or "no" as your safe word because those words may come up during sex without you actually intending for your partner to stop. A word like "book club" or "asparagus," however do not usually find their way into bedroom vocabulary.

Safe words are a great way to open up communication and start exploring new areas of passion. If used with respect and love, they can greatly enhance the adventure level of your sex life.
